BS7258 (BS EN14175)-  is the British Standard for ducted fume cupboards and sets out (written in 4 parts) their basic manufacturing and performance criteria.
Part 1 Specification for fume cupboard safety and performance
Part 2 Recommendations for the exchange of information and installation
Part 3 Recommendation for selection use and maintenance
Part 4  Method for determination of containment testing

Included within the standard is information on:

  • Face velocity, mean and deviance (part 1)

  • General specification requirements

  • User information requirements

  • Containment testing  (part 4)

  • Construction considerations

  • Brightness (lux) level

  • Sash height etc

Useful information: Velocity = volume ÷ area
Volume = velocity x area
Recommended extraction velocities: In the duct: less than 7.5m/sec
At discharge: 7.5 to 10m/sec
General: Volume: 1m3/sec = 2,119ft3/min
Velocity 1m/sec = 196.8ft/min
Pressure: 1inch wg = 25.4mm wg. 1inch wg = 249.1 PA
