VLF - Vertical Laminar Flow cabinets (laf) differ from the HLF as the air, as the name implies cascades downwards from the hepa filter above the work surface.

HLF - horizontal laminar flow cabinets (laf) provide a clean, hepa filtered unidirectional (laminar) air stream over the working surface.

These are used where the sample material needs to be kept free from contamination from the surrounding laboratory/facilities environment in many industries from heavy engineering to the manufacture and electronic components.
